As a brand inspired by textiles, HaaT frequently works with KYO CHIJIMI fabric. This exhibition spotlights “KYO CHIJIMI DOTS,” which is the same fabric with polka dots applied through a technique called discharge printing.

Discharge printing is a technique that removes colour from fabric. It is a technique that has been used since ancient times in Japan for dyeing yukatas and kimonos. Molds filled with discharge paste are placed on the fabric to remove colour from those parts of the fabric and create patterns. KYO CHIJIMI DOTS features a polka dot pattern that is created by rhythmically trickling discharged dots on monochromatic and vibrant green KYO CHIJIMI styles.

The polka dot pattern is created by hand by Kyoto artisans one piece at a time . The way the garments sway as they move with the body when worn corresponds to the elasticity of KYO CHIJIMI, which has a unique crepey texture. This exhibition, which focuses on the organic nature of the fabric, depicts the transformation of the polka dot pattern into clothing through graphic animations and visual projections by photographer Yuriko Takagi.

Savor the appeal of the lightweight and supple KYO CHIJIMI DOTS pieces through this immersive experience in the KURA space.
