Introducing HaaT’s new exhibition showcasing BHILL, a traditional Indian handicraft work.

BHILL is a skillful technique in which craftsmen masterfully manipulate sewing machines to embroider intricate patterns onto garments. It was first developed in India as a method to repair frayed fabrics and loose threads so that they were durable and long lasting. Using stenciled chalk lines as a guide, delicate embroidery patterns are drawn freehand by craftspeople before BHILL embroidery is applied to the fabric.

This exhibition introduces BHILL in a visual story captured through the lens of photographer Yuriko Takagi. The display highlights embroidered products, including traditional Indian chintz patterns along with detailed plant patterns inspired by the season.

We hope that this exhibition will be an excellent opportunity to experience the fascinating process behind HaaT’s textile design, where utility and decoration harmonize to create diverse expressions.
