HaaT “CREPE TARTAN”

The SHIKAKU at ISSEY MIYAKE SHINJUKU presents an exhibition, “CREPE TARTAN” by HaaT

CREPE TARTAN

The exhibition will present the “CREPE TARTAN” large stole from HaaT’s textiles that will bring warmth to the coming seasons.

Hachioji, Tokyo, once called the “silk capital of mulberry plants,” prospered through Japanese silkworm cultivation, silk spinning, and textile production. CREPE TARTAN incorporates the technique of Tama-ori, which was cultivated in this area, to skillfully weave natural fibres of cotton, silk, and wool yarns into a check pattern.

CREPE TARTAN is carefully woven, one-by-one, in a workshop which passes down the Tama-ori technique, utilizing 120 years of history by craftsmen making full use of traditional shuttle machines. Different colours of yarn are double woven and cut open to create a lightweight textile that seems as if it could gently float in the air. Fringes are created along the four edges of the textile using a technique called yori-fusa to give the design a stylish accent. Weaving stretch yarns into the centre part gives the textile a voluminous texture that falls naturally on the shoulders, and a dynamic check pattern.

In this exhibition, along with a video showing the exquisite processes that takes place in the workshop to create CREPE TARTAN, you will also be able to discover CREPE TARTAN in SHIKAKU’s space. We encourage all to come and experience the fine craftsmanship behind this stole.
