“TRIANGLE DYE”
The KURA gallery of ISSEY MIYAKE KYOTO presents KURA Exhibition “TRIANGLE DYE.”
132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE presents its latest work of design and making “TRIANGLE DYE.” The brand has been conducting research and development centring around garments that transform from three-dimensional forms to two-dimensional surfaces.
Inspired by a spiral staircase, TRIANGLE DYE is a series featuring garments designed in spiral forms of connecting triangular shapes. The fabric is dyed with the itajime (“board-tightened”) resist dyeing technique that creates patterns by compressing parts of a fabric between wooden boards to make them resistant to dye. The dye pattern on the fabric in the folded form appears to be a white block. As the fabric unfolds into a spiral, the pattern develops into a hexagon.
The gallery is enveloped in a video projection of triangular graphics changing one after another. The real sound taken from the itajime dyeing process in the background evokes a sense of being at the craftspeople’s studio. Experience the world of TRIANGLE DYE—how the pattern of many and different organic expressions unfolds like a kaleidoscope.
