KURA Exhibition “Uchiwa Fans”

At ISSEY MIYAKE KYOTO, we asked Aiba, a long-established fan shop in Kyoto with a history of 329 years since its establishment in 1689, to create a fan with the motif of the shop logo. I was.

“Kyo Uchiwa” is characterized by the “Sashigara” structure, in which the fan surface and the pattern are made separately, and the pattern is inserted into the framework later. Developed from this pattern, the “open-air fan,” in which the design is cut out and placed on the front and back of the frame, was created by Aiba, who is working on new manufacturing using the skills of skilled craftsmen. The attitude of incorporating new ideas while preserving the tradition of uchiwa is in line with the spirit of Issey Miyake's craftsmanship.

In the “KURA Exhibition: Uchiwa,” we introduce the handicrafts of Aiha that have lived through the changing times. We will exhibit a fan designed as a tribute to Jakuchu.
